One of the 2010 – 2011 season offerings at New Theater in Overland Park, Kansas was “Sylvia”. This is a play about how a rescue dog comes between a man and his wife; Cindy Williams of Laverne and Shirley fame played the wife.
Williams had an idea that during curtain call a shelter dog should be presented for adoption. The director thought is was a great idea. They cooperated with Animal Haven Shelter, the largest no-kill shelter in the greater Kansas City area, to introduce one dog per show. The efforts by Williams and New Theater were captured in a recent People magazine article. 63 shelter dogs had been adopted to date.An employee of New Theater said that there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when the dogs were presented. One person who adopted a dog called the theater office gushing about how happy she was and that this was a wonderful happening for rescues. People dedicated to anipals can be very resourceful, and this is an incredible example of their commitment.

What a wonderful idea to find homes for all those doggys
What a cool idea! This makes me want to reach out to local theaters to suggest they do something similar!
What a fantastic idea – a good way to get the word out about “rescuing” and animal from a pet shalter.
