More news is coming in of anipals lost or injured after the earthquake of 4 September on New Zealand’s South Island.
The New Zealand Herald featured a story about a stitched up pup damaged by glass. Charlie panicked when the quake hit and rocked over the family bookcase, so he jumped out the window and got glass cuts that needed stitches. A German Shepherd named Achilles and a bunny, called Rabbit, who are best buddies, are still chilling out after the quake left them unharmed. Their owner said they often play chase which worries visitors who don’t know that the bunny gives as good as it gets and chases the dog back. MOL!
Canterbury SPCA (the Local SPCA office to Christchurch) said they anticipate an increase in the number of lost and homeless animals coming into their care over the coming days. Hundreds of people are ringing in about their lost anipals, as the lost dogs and cats don’t come home to their families, and there is even a homeless budgie (a bird)!
The SPCA is working flat out to help those lost animals that come into its care in the hope that lost families can be reunited. They have brief advice for anyone in the Christchurch area who finds an apparently lost animal. This is worth reading too if you are in another quake-prone area.
Cats – May well live in the neighbourhood. Remember, they are creatures that roam, so please do NOT displace a cat by taking it to a shelter immediately — unless it is injured or obviously starving. [Readers must remember that unlike America, cats in New Zealand are mostly outdoor anipals without the predators common in the USA.] If anyone is absolutely sure a cat is lost — then take it to the SPCA.
Dogs – Can be taken to the Christchurch City Animal Control for safety until they are claimed by their owners.
Donations can be made to help the New Zealand SPCA looking after and reuniting anipals here. Recent report on missing anipals can be found here.

Thanx for update. Pa talked wif an earthquake specialist, he said glass cuts are the most common injuries. The windows break first thing and everyone runs around in a panic. Important to have bandages and have your humans keep a wrapped up pair of shoes under the bed and booties for dogs.
Just saw on TV that NZ has now been hit with severe SNOW !! Heart goes out to all the lost Pals……already scared…and now snow. Sigh…. Thank goodness for the good people who are helping reunite Pals and their owners. XXX
What a skeery thing to have happen–both for humans and anipals. Then to be snowed upon on top of a massive earthquake. Brrrrrrr. I hope all the lost pets find their homes really soon!
Oh dat’s terrible. Those poor anipals. How very scary it must have been for dem and how scary now trying to find their way back home. Thanks for the update friend.
