A major earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand, early on the morning of Sunday 5 September 2010.

People are rallying to help the anipals as much as the humans. Online notice boards here are posting details about lost or found anipals. The Council is also helping look after anipals at the Animal Control Centre at Metro Place, Bromley, if their humans’ houses are unsafe and people can’t go home. Canterbury SPCA (local) have web space devoted to pet emergency advice, and “What to do if you have lost your pet” which is really helpful.

Most farm animals are OK, according to Federated Farmers who look after farmers in the area, you can see their web page. They are also offering out-of-town accommodation for those affected by the quake and are the first stop for all farmers in the area – worth a read for on-the-ground reports, and a fascinating read for those who live in rural areas themselves and who want to know how things are done by farmers here.

On a happier note, news footage showed a couple with their cat at one of the quake rescue centres, so not everyone has run away. An excellent article by the New Zealand Herald has many important and useful details and gives an idea if the impact the quake has had on anipals. Also see how New Zealand anipals are helping.

It seems, that there are a lot of anipals who need to find their way home, but there are a lot of people trying to help them.

New Zealand has two islands called North Island and South Island. The north island is more highly populated over a wider area (it’s about the size of Great Britain), it’s flatter and less mountainous; the south island is less densely populated but is a tourist destination par excellence — wonderful scenery, vast open spaces of great beauty and people concentrated in smaller areas like Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin.
