Tennessee Flood Relief

The flood in Nashville, Tennessee, held the attention of the U.S. last week. We know the scary weather affected some of our Twitter anipals. @Katieboocat (an editor for The Anipal Times) and @ForeverGinger were online with us while they were facing tornadoes and creeks running over their banks. We sent purrs and heaved big sighs of relief when the wind died down, the rain stopped and the water stopped rising.

Katie and Ginger and their families made it through without a scrape, but other humans and animals weren’t so lucky. Many vet clinics escaped harm in the flooding too, but those on the west side of the city weren’t so lucky, according to DVM360. The Nashville Humane Association has information about shelter locations if you have found a lost pet or are looking for someone who got lost in the crisis.

The NHA’s Facebook page is updated regularly and is a great resource to find out what the NHA currently needs. The page said Sunday that flood survivors can get food for their pets and other supplies at the NHA Pet Food Bank, 213 Oceola Avenue, in Nashville. Regular business hours for the NHA are 10 a.m  to 5 p.m. every day except Wednesday, and Saturday and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Their phone number is 615-352-1010.

To help the NHA provide emergency food and supplies, you may donate online. NHA has also asked for gift cards to PetSmart, Petco, Nashville Pet Products, Walmart, or Target.

Other Ways to Help

Other organizations and people are helping as well. You can proclaim your solidarity with the animals affected by the flood and support relief efforts financially by buying a shirt on eBay. The shirt features dogs on a raft and says, “Helping Animals in Music City, USA.” Every shirt sold raises $10 for displaced pets and their humans.

You can join Currie McAlpine’s Facebook page for Nashville Flood Rescued Pets. The page has 263 members as of Monday morning.

Publisher’s Paw reports that the Brown Dog Foundation, which helps pets get medical care when their humans are having financial difficulties, has a special fund-raising initiative for pets affected by the flood as well.

High-Profile Help

The flood affected a number of well known entertainers and their pets, and these folks have thrown in their support for other pets who survived the flood. American pop singer-songwriter Ke$ha donated money and food to the Nashville Metro Animal Shelter. The singer will also play a benefit for human and animal flood survivors in June, according to the New York Times.

Please send information about other opportunities to help our Middle Tennessee anipals to cheshirek AT anipaltimes DOT com. We will keep the community posted on how to help as the situation changes.
