How to Make Nice with the Vet

Since the dawn of time, anipals and veterinarians have had a bit of a tense relationship. We’re just doing our jobs, mind you – though it is very difficult to convince an understandably apoplectic kitty that all this poking, prodding, and taking of temperatures is done in his best interest. Trust me, we don’t enjoy taking your temperature any more than you enjoy having it done. Relax and think of sunny fields – it’ll be over in a snap.

That being said, there’s no reason every visit has to be a torment for everyone. We vets don’t get into the field because we enjoy causing you anipals distress; quite the opposite, I promise. So here are a few tips for getting off on the best paw with your vet:

  • If you’re getting to that “I really am angry” stage – and that’s OK, it happens – just give us a little heads up, OK? A growl, some tail flicking; have your person let us know what to watch out for. Vets like to be prepared before a bite happens so we can take evasive measures. Bites are stressful on everyone.
  • If you’re the very scared type, you might want to have your person ask ahead to find out slower times at the clinic to minimize your wait.
  • A yoga or shower mat can be brought for the metal exam table if you’re the type who likes to run in place and skid all over the table top. Of course, favorite blankets are fine, too. Traction is a good thing.
  • Feel free to stop by when you aren’t due for an exam or procedure. We’d love to see you! It’s nice to have a visit that doesn’t cause you any distress, so you can see we really are nice humans at heart (and maybe remember that at vaccine time).
  • Bring your favorite treats. For some reason we vets don’t always pick the best treats to keep around to say “Thank you” for being good. If generic Milk-Bones aren’t your thing, but you go gaga for liver treats, tote them along.
  • Bring our favorite treats. Find out your vet’s favorite cookie and bring it in for the staff. A little bribe never hurt anyone. ;)

Cokie the Cat 21 April 2010 at 1:22 am

Mom used to always tell vets I was a nice cat. Now she warns them. LOL. I tend to get very… aggressive once my mom leaves the room. =^..^= Who knew?? With such pretty blue eyes and being so floofy and all?? ; )
