The Healing Art of Pet Parenthood, by Nadine M Rosin, is a memoir about the nineteen years she spent with her daughter, a dog named Buttons.
The duo faced many obstacles together, and in turn learned about unconditional love and living in the moment. Their biggest challenge though came when, at 8 years old, Buttons was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Nadine couldn’t imagine putting her baby through the harsh treatment the vet recommended. Instead she adopted a holistic approach to Buttons’ care. Miraculously Buttons not only improved, but she was able to maintain good health for an additional 11 years before age took its toll.
Buttons passed away just a week before her 19th birthday, but that wasn’t the end of their story. Through her grief, Nadine discovered that she still had a spiritual connection with her little Butski (aka Buttons). It was that connection which inspired Nadine to tell their story, and reach out to other pet parents who had suffered a similar loss.
My Mom, who raised and cared for my late brother @OscarTheCat for 18 years (before he passed), told me that the story was well written and easy to relate to. Considering that, and the fact that one of Nadine’s landlords thought Buttons was really a cat in dog’s body, I feel quite comfortable recommending this book.
